Bushwick Neighborhood Divided Over Removal Of Yarn Mural
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A controversial mural made of yarn was taken down in Brooklyn on Wednesday.
As 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported, it was three 15-foot characters made of yarn and holding hands on the side of a building on Wyckoff and Willoughby avenues in Bushwick.
Lulu said it was a great addition to the neighborhood.
"I was even surprised they cleaned it, and those are the new people that came in that cleaned it, and look at this. It's sad, it's really sad," she said.
Street artist London Kaye said without permission from the building's owner, she understands having to take it down.
"The owner's nephew does not want it here, and so I'm taking it down," Kaye said.
Some residents said they see the mural as hipster entitlement, Jones reported.
"It's great that she has this creativity, but she should be putting it to beneficial use, and something better," said resident Josh, who added that without permission, the art is graffiti and should come down."
But Grace said she doesn't really see the problem.
"I think that's what Bushwick is, it's an artistic neighborhood, and we have a lot of creative people around here. Yea, it's always sad to see stuff come down," she said.
Kaye said though she is reminded of how much time she invested in the project, she's OK with having to take the mural down. She said she hope to put the figures up somewhere else -- with permission.
