Police: Man, Dogs Shot, House Set On Fire In Yaphank

YAPHANK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police were searching for a suspect Tuesday night after a man and two dogs were shot, and a house was set on fire, in Yaphank.

The 27-year-old man and the dogs were found shot in the home on the 100 block of Long Island Avenue in Yaphank around 5:30 p.m., Suffolk County police said. The man was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

One of the dogs died, and the other was taken to a local shelter, police said.

The house was fully engulfed in flames when Yaphank firefighters arrived, police said. Multiple other departments were called to the scene to help extinguish the fire.

The man who was shot is a friend of the family that owns the home, police said.

A suspect fled the scene, police said. No detailed description was available.
