Yankees Fans Blast Robbie Cano With Boos, Chants Of 'You Sold Out!'

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Seattle Mariners star Robinson Cano was hoping for a standing ovation in his first trip back to Yankee Stadium since saying bye-bye to the Bronx for a gigantic payday in free agency.

Instead he got booed early and often by angry Yankees fans, some joining in on a chant of "You sold out! You sold out!" during Cano's first at-bat.

CC Sabathia said that'll happen in New York. Yankees captain Derek Jeter agreed.

"Some people cheered, most people booed," Jeter said. "Some people probably booed because they wish he was here, some people booed because they were upset he left. Some people booed because the people next to them booed. It's not the first time someone's come back and got booed."

Cano said it wasn't a big deal or much of a distraction. But on Twitter, a debate raged over whether the slugger deserved that sort of treatment for taking $65 million more to sign with the Mariners -- especially from a fan base that just saw its team spend over $470 million this offseason.

"Seriously, get outta here. You can't be serious. C'mon. Sincerely, The rest of baseball," Grant Brisbee of SB Nation wrote in an open letter to Yankees fans.

Cano got the last laugh in the end, going 1-for-5 with an RBI in the Mariners' 6-3 victory.

And win or lose, he still has that 10-year, $240 million contract.
