Yankees Place Sabathia On DL With Groin Injury

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The injuries are piling up for the New York Yankees.

The team placed left-handed starter CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a left groin strain.

Sabathia was coming off his strongest outing of the season Wednesday night at Baltimore, in which he allowed no runs and six hits over seven innings in a 7-0 victory.

For the season, Sabathia, 35, is 2-2 with a 3.81 ERA.

The Yankees called up left-hander Phil Coke from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Coke pitched for the Bombers from 2008-09.

The Yankees placed designated hitter Alex Rodriguez on the 15-day DL on Wednesday with a strained hamstring and called up outfielder Ben Gamel on Thursday after Brett Gardner was hit on the elbow by a pitch.

Entering Friday's game against the Red Sox, the Yankees are 9-17 and in last place in the American League East.
