Wounded Warrior Project Holds Soldier Ride On Long Island

LINDENHURST, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The 7th Annual Wounded Warrior Project's Soldier Ride is taking place on Long Island.

The biking event kicked off Friday morning in Lindenhurst.

It will raise $500,000 to support veterans dealing with disabilities after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

More than 1,100 riders, including Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, are participating this year.

Over 60 wounded soldiers, some who are using bicycles specifically modified for their various injuries and disabilities, are also involved.

"Everybody's wounds are different, but everybody is facing the challenge and adapting to the ride and the conditions on the road today," rider Brennick Jordan, who was injured by a roadside bomb in Baghdad in 2007, told 1010 WINS.

Jordan said the ride is an opportunity for the wounded warriors to bond with each other.

"It's great that the public is out here supporting us and cheering us on, it makes us so much more motivated to do this," Jordan said. "Honestly, it's more of a team building thing with our brothers and sisters who are in the same situation as us."

The ride will end with a party at the beach.
