World Trade Center Artifacts Removed From Storage After 15 Years

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An airplane hangar at John F. Kennedy Airport that once held 2,500 artifacts from the original World Trade Center will be emptied in a special ceremony Tuesday afternoon.

Members of the NYPD, FDNY and the Port Authority Police will join members of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation at Hangar 17 in a solemn ceremony to reflect on the artifacts and the role first responders played during 9/11 and its aftermath.

Among the items being moved is a 40,000 pound World Trade Center parking column, a 35,000 pound elevator motor and a massive TV antenna that once stood on the North Tower, WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported.

"You can see how large it is, it's about 14-feet to a side, about three-feet high," Amy Passiak, of the Port Authority said of the antenna.

The artifacts were kept at the hangar in Queens for the last 15 years. Following the ceremony, the artifacts will fall into the care of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which will find new homes for the pieces of history.

Other items will eventually be put on public display.
