Family Escapes Raging Blaze In Wood-Ridge, New Jersey

WOOD-RIDGE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A knock on the door helped a family get out of a burning home alive in Wood-Ridge, New Jersey Friday.

The fire broke out in an apartment building on Avalon Drive in Wood-Ridge late Friday afternoon.

The blaze began in a dumpster around 7 p.m., and spread to a garage area, officials told CBS2.

One resident did not know the fire was approaching her apartment building until a friend banged on her door telling her to get out.

"And then I walked over because I have a balcony in my apartment, and walked over, and I see everything engulfed in flames," the woman said, "so the first thing I thought was to grab my child to get him out of there."

The resident's disabled son was treated for smoke inhalation, but he was expected to recover.
