Patient Suffers Minor Injuries After Bullet Strikes Hospital Window In Manhattan
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Manhattan hospital patient suffered minor injuries after her window was shattered by a bullet.
The incident occurred around 5:45 a.m. Friday at the Hospital for Special Surgery on the Upper East Side.
The bullet struck a window on the eighth floor, where a 30-year-old woman was lying in her hospital bed, police said.
She was hit by broken glass and treated for minor cuts to her face. The patient was relocated to another room, where hospital officials said she was in stable condition.
The woman was not the intended target and the shot was apparently a stray, sources told CBS 2.
"It's a shame that people can't even be safe in a place that they go to be made well and get quality of life," said Barbara DeVries, who checked into the hospital Friday for knee surgery and a 10-day stay.
"That must have been a frightening ordeal for her, on top of whatever she's going through," DeVries added.
"It'd be great to get an outside room and have a view of the river, but now maybe it's safer to take an inside room," her husband, Dave DeVries, said.
The NYPD sent a crime scene van to the hospital to process evidence, including the bullet which lodged in the metal window frame, CBS 2's Tony Aiello reported. Police will be checking to see if it matches other shootings, sources said.
Eighty feet below the hospital window on the FDR access road, two police cones marked where investigators found evidence, including at least one bullet casing.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
This is the first shooting incident so far this year in the 19th Police Precinct.
Shooting incidents citywide have recently spiked, causing great concern for the NYPD, Aiello reported.
