Woman Hit, Injured By Forklift In Borough Park, Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was struck and injured by a forklift Wednesday afternoon, while crossing a street in Borough Park, Brooklyn.

As CBS 2's Lou Young reported, the driver was taken away in handcuffs after the accident at 13th Avenue and 60th Street around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The forklift remained at the scene hours later. People in a nearby lumber yard said a woman was in the middle of the street, and they heard her screams as she was struck and run over.

"I heard the screaming. We went outside. She was in the middle of the street and bleeding," one man said. "Very bad."

The forklift was not believed to be associated with one of the lumber businesses on the block where the accident happened, but from another business around the corner.

The operator was using the forklift like a vehicle which is a violation of traffic law, Young reported. He was taken into custody at the scene.

The victim, described as woman in her 70s, had both legs somewhat crushed and was taken to an area hospital in serious condition. Her injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

The accident scene remained cordoned off as the investigation continued.
