Woman Critical After Being Struck By Car In Washington Heights Hit-And-Run

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD is looking for a hit-and-run driver who struck a woman in Upper Manhattan late Friday night.

Police say the victim, identified by her family as 42-year-old Renee Edwards, was walking her dog across St. Nicholas Avenue in Washington Heights just after 10:30 p.m. when a black Chrysler 300M sedan blew through a red light at West 157th Street and turned left, smashing right into her and leaving her clinging to life.

"Renee is in critical condition. She has bleeding on her brain, her leg is broken, and they said there are some more injuries they need to check out," her mother, Beverly Bennett, told CBS2's Reena Roy.

Surveillance video from nearby shows Edwards pushed onto the car's front bumper before the driver runs her over.

"I knew by the way he was speeding off that it couldn't be good," neighbor Hardy Baskerville said.

"I saw all the lights outside and I heard people screaming, and I'm saying, 'What happened out there?' Next thing I know, the super was knocking on the door with the dog," said Bennett. "He said, 'I got the dog, your daughter got hit by a car.' And I went running down."

"She's the world to me, she's my baby," she added.

Edwards was left in the middle of the street with her 3-year-old dog left unharmed, waiting by her side as the driver fled southbound on St. Nicholas.

"Last night, I heard a boom. She was bleeding," neighbor Iris Rodriguez said.

"I went over and tried to check her out and tried to help her out, but from the looks of things it was really bad," said Baskerville. "She was twisted up pretty bad."

Edwards was taken to Mount Sinai St. Luke's Hospital in critical condition. Her family said she may have to go into surgery.

"People hit and running and hitting people, they just keep going -- come on, you don't do that. How do you have a conscious, how can you live with yourself?" Bennett said.

No arrests have been made as the investigation is ongoing.
