CT Woman Gets Probation After Bringing Handgun To Daughter's School

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Connecticut mother who went to her daughter's middle school with a handgun has been placed on special probation that could lead to dismissal of the charge.

Elizabeth Vargas, 37, of Stratford, did not plead guilty to possession of a weapon on school grounds, but was placed on 18 months of probation Wednesday. If she refrains from criminal activity during that period, the charge will be dismissed.

Police say Vargas was called to Wooster Middle School last month about a disciplinary issue with her daughter. An administrator called police. Vargas said she was on her way to a shooting range when she was called to the school.

Vargas had a permit for .380 caliber pistol she was carrying and the gun was unloaded at the time she was on school grounds, the Connecticut Post reported.

Her lawyer said her arrest was "unfortunate.''
