Wilmer Flores On Way In Mets' Shortstop Shakeup
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The slumping New York Mets are shaking things up at shortstop.
But -- sorry, fans -- that doesn't mean free-agent Stephen Drew is on the way.
The Mets announced on Wednesday that Omar Quintanilla would be designated for assignment "in anticipation of another roster move."
That move will be in the form of a Wilmer Flores promotion from Triple-A, the team tweeted Thursday.
Quintanilla was batting .207 in 29 at-bats. But this could be more about embattled infielder Ruben Tejada, who figures to see more time on the pine while the Mets get a look at Flores.
Tejada, not exactly popular among fans, is hitting .183 with two doubles and six RBIs.
Flores could be a defensive downgrade, but the Mets are hoping he can make up for it at the plate. The 22-year-old, who moved back to shortstop this spring after two years playing first, second and third base, is batting .307 with five home runs and 25 RBIs in the minors.
The Mets have lost six of seven games, including a sweep in Miami, and haven't scored a run in 23 consecutive innings.
