Wake-Up Calls From Wild Chickens Have Plainview Residents In A 'Fowl' Mood

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An early morning wake-up call of the wild has left residents in one Long Island town in a fowl mood.

As CBS2's Steve Langford reported, a bunch of wild chickens have taken a liking to one neighborhood.

It's beginning to look and sound like a bit of a barnyard on and around the normally restful Knickerbocker Road in Plainview.

"They cockadoodledo at five in the morning, and that could wake you up," Robert Schuman said.

Wild roosters and a couple of hens have been on the loose for weeks, and it's prompted all sorts of cluck-clucking about the neighborhood turning into a farm.

"We're not happy, none of the neighbors are happy about it," Fredda Klenosky said.

There have been complaints filed, but while local officials say they're trying to come up with a solution wild chickens are no easier to control than geese or seagulls.

"They said they're just like geese, wild geese and you just have to leave them alone," one resident explained.

Locals said the feral roosters and hens generally stuck to a wooded area across the street behind the shopping mall, but recently, for some reason they crossed the road.

It's possible that somebody in the neighborhood is feeding the birds, as some feel the chickens add a pastoral touch to life in Plainview, not to mention perspective.

"There are other things in this world that we should worry about than chickens, okay," Susan Thomas said.

The Town of Oyster Bay told CBS2 that trapping wild chickens is not something they're equipped to do.

The State Department of Environmental Conservation did not reply to a request for comment.
