After years and years of anticipation, Broadway's iconic musical Wicked is finally hitting the big screen.

The announcement came Thursday with the movie being released by Universal Pictures in December 2019.

Marc Platt, producer of the Broadway show and part of the team responsible for bringing Broadway's Into the Woods to theaters, will produce the film. Billy Elliot's Stephen Daldry will be directing the film.

While no formal announcements have been made about the cast, there is plenty of speculation as to who may secure the iconic roles. Rumors say that Glee's Lea Michelle is one of the front-runners for Elphaba, the green misunderstood wicked witch, Idina "Adele Dazeem" Menzel made famous in the original cast on Broadway.

E! asked Kristen Chenoweth, Menzel's former co-star, if she planned to have another collaboration and she responded, "I'm not going to say. It's a secret."

Wicked premiered on Broadway in 2003 to rave reviews, spawning many productions across the globe.
