White Plains To Equip All Uniformed Cops With Body Cameras
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The White Plains police department hopes to have all of its uniformed officers equipped with body cameras by the fall.
The police department says it plans to spend $80,000 to buy 50 cameras, software and related technology.
Police Lt. Todd Moskalik told the Journal News that the cameras protect the integrity of the department by showing an entire incident, not just snippets caught on cellphones. Moskalik oversaw the department's five-camera pilot program that began in July.
White Plains Public Safety Commissioner David Chong says the cameras reaffirm the agency's commitment to community policing and transparency.
White Plains-Greenburgh NAACP President Lena Anderson told the Journal News she is "pleased that this is actually coming to fruition."
Rob Riley, president of the White Plains Police Benevolent Association, said the cameras would reduce false accusations and frivolous lawsuits.
