Dozens Camping Out In Oppressive Heat For Days In West Village For Shot At Carpenters Apprenticeship

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Dozens are braving the oppressive heat and humidity for a shot at a union's carpenters apprenticeships.

CBS2's Brian Conybeare reported the District Council of Carpenters will accept 250 applications beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday.

Donna Sadowsky joined her son on Friday as he was camping out on the sidewalk since Wednesday.

"Let me tell you, it has been freaking hot for these guys," Sadowsky told WCBS 880's Mike Smeltz. "And the rain and the thunderstorms, it's been brutal."

Unfortunately, nothing much has helped to stifle the heat. 

"There is no way to stay cool in this, there really isn't," she said.

Dave Mummiani has also made Clarkson Street his home since Wednesday, all in the hopes of getting a lottery card for the chance at an apprenticeship.

"It's really hot, sticky, humid. That fire hydrant has become home," he said.

John Gardell of Staten Island told CBS2's Conybeare that it's worth it to deal with the heat just to fill out an application to become a union apprentice.

"I'm still determined and motivated like I was on Monday," Gardell said.

One person even suffered from heat exhaustion and vomited, but still stayed in line.

Last month, hundreds slept on the streets of Queens for a shot at the Plumbers Union Apprenticeship Program.
