Heavy rain impacts morning commute in New York, New Jersey area

Snow in the forecast for NYC this Sunday

Commuters should brace themselves as heavy rain and some snow are impacting the Tri-State Area on Friday morning.

It's a First Alert Weather Day as soaking rain is pushing through the region.

Farther north, temperatures are just cold enough for one to three inches of snow, creating an even trickier start to the day. Roads will be wet, visibility may drop at times, and it's a good idea to give yourself some extra time out the door.

What's the weather for today?

Through the late morning and midday, expect more waves of steady rain. A rain and snow mix will be north and west of the city.

By the afternoon, the intensity eases a bit. Temperatures will settle in the low 40s with light rain or a drizzle.

Tonight brings some leftovers. There will be patchy light rain or snow, especially to the north and east. But the trend is toward conditions calming down.

Winter weather alerts

There are winter weather advisories in place until noon for communities in north New York and New Jersey.

Some of those areas could see one inch of snow and 0.2 inches of ice.

Snow forecast this weekend

The weekend brings a bit of balance.

Saturday looks like the break we need: partly sunny, mild and reaching the mid to upper 40s. Sunday turns active again.

Forecasters are watching a developing system Sunday night that looks increasingly likely to bring accumulating snow and gusty winds. Highs will only be in the 30s.

Monday morning may also bring more snow and wind as the same system lingers.

Forecasters will have more updates as the weekend system gets closer.
