Engine Trouble Leads To Scary Moments For Wayne Valley Students On Senior Trip

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (CBSNewYork) -- A bus carrying students from a North Jersey high school was involved in an accident in eastern Pennsylvania, that sent nine people to the hospital.

"I hit my head with my friend. She went to the hospital, but she's fine," Jenny Cohen told CBS2's Lou Young.

Cohen was talking about the frightening accident she recorded Tuesday morning, on I-78 in Pennsylvania.

It was a senior trip for the graduating class at Wayne Valley High School in Wayne, New Jersey. A school bus convoy was making its way to Dorney Park near Allentown when one of the buses developed engine trouble.

Jenny said she the phone out as passing motorists signaled, and the engine began to smoke.

"The whole time the car was honking, and they didn't do anything about it, so we started smoking and then he tried to change lanes and we got hit," Cohen said.

"The bus driver tried to get over, but there was another 18 wheeler coming and he just hit us. There was nothing he could do," Taylor Coyle said.

The Fed Ex truck side swiped the school bus with 37 on board. A handful of the seniors were taken to a local hospital, but we have no report of any serious injury. They were able to continue to their trip and spoke to CBS2 after returning to Wayne.

"It's scary to know that could happen to anybody," Wes Helmi said.

Just last week we saw a gruesome example of what can happen when a vehicle becomes disabled on an interstate driving lane. Three people died on I-84 after being rear-ended by a tractor trailer.

The young people from Wayne know how fortunate they are.

"We're going to school to a normal senior trip and everything and it's scary to know that could happen to any of us," Helmi said.

It was a lesson in fortune and mortality for the class of 2016.
