Water Main Ruptures In Hamilton Heights

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A ruptured water main created a wet mess in the middle of Broadway in Hamilton Heights.

Around 9:45 a.m. Monday, a huge geyser-like gusher of water could be seen shooting way up into the sky at 148th Street and Broadway, CBS2's Scott Rapoport reported.

Crews were installing a new water main when a 12-inch valve broke, sending the water flying, the Department of Environmental Protection said.

"The street was flooded," resident Sheila Gartner said. "It was coming from the sewer; it was like spurting up like really high."

Crews are still working on turning the water off. Nearby businesses have not been affected.
