Police: Suspect Tried To Rape Woman In Washington Heights Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police were searching Tuesday for a suspect who allegedly tried to rape a woman in a Washington Heights apartment building.

The incident happened around 1 a.m. this past Saturday, when the suspect allegedly followed the 33-year-old woman onto an elevator in a building on 172nd Street, police said.

The victim got off at her floor, and the suspect followed, police said. As the victim began to open the door of her apartment, the suspect tried to rape her, police said.

The victim was able to fight the man off, and she got into her apartment and locked the door, police said. The suspect left the building, and no injuries were reported.

Police released a surveillance video clip of the suspect.
