Wally Backman To Join Mets' Coaching Staff On Sept. 19
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Wally Backman is joining the Mets.
But no, he's not replacing manager Terry Collins.
Backman, the manager of the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s, will join the big club's coaching staff on September 19 and stay with the team through the end of the season.
Through the end of the season, of course, means just nine games.

The former Met, who was famously part of the 1986 World Series championship squad, has been a manager in New York's farm system for five years. He led the 51s to an 81-63 record this season and was named the Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year.

With Collins on the verge of his fourth consecutive losing season, fans have been calling for Backman to get a shot in the dugout. According to reports, however, it appears that the incumbent manager will be back in 2015.
Backman was a candidate for New York's managerial opening prior to the 2011 season after Jerry Manuel was let go. He interviewed, but general manager Sandy Alderson hired Collins.
