Volunteers To Help Sandy-Ravaged Rockaways Facility Get Ready For Universal Pre-K

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A new pre-kindergarten space is set to rise out of the destruction of superstorm Sandy in the Rockaways.

As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, a volunteer group has pitched in to allow a nursery school to expand its offerings.

"We're gonna be converting an old caretaker's house into universal pre-K classrooms," site manager Cameron Shore of the volunteer group New York Cares told Smith.

Work gets under way this week at the West End Temple to transform the ruins of Sandy into Mayor Bill de Blasio's much talked about vision for pre-K.

"It's going to be two classrooms with, there'll be some sort of teacher's lounge area upstairs and then two bathrooms and a kitchenette downstairs as well," said Shore.

Volunteers with the group finished rehabbing a Rockaways food pantry over the weekend.

The classrooms are expected to be completed by June so they can open to students in the fall.
