Video, Audio Recordings From Fatal Shooting Of Nassau Cop Released To Public

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Videos and 911 calls made during the minutes leading up to and after the murder of a Nassau County police officer were released to the public Thursday.

"...At a safe distance, approximately 55 mph...he's on all flats right now," were the last words Nassau County police officer Artie Lopez transmitted on his police radio, moments before the fleeing driver allegedly shot him.

"Speed is about 55 mph, refusing to pull over," Lopez said.

As CBS 2's Carolyn Gusoff reported, police radio transmissions were released Thursday in the trial against Darrell Fuller, a parolee accused of fleeing from a crash before shooting Lopez.

Lopez's partner then radios for help.

"My partner's down, get an ambulance here forthwith. Subject took off. Gunshot wound," he said.

Fuller allegedly continued along the Cross Island Parkway, dragging an innocent motorist out of his car and killing him.

An off-duty New York City police officer witnessed the scene and gave chase, but first he videotaped the fleeing driver with Lopez in pursuit, Gusoff reported.

"This guy's making a run for it from the cops," the off-duty officer can be heard saying in the video.

The off-duty officer stayed on the phone with 911, trailing the armed suspect.

"I'm watching a guy. He just shot a Nassau cop," the officer said.

He then led police to the fleeing suspect.

"He just left Springfield and 114th," he said.

It was 20 minutes before officers arrived, Gusoff reported.

"I need an ETA of someone getting down there. It's 20 minutes already," the 911 dispatcher said.

The officer's family had asked to keep the tapes in the courtroom, but the judge ruled the public had a right to see the same evidence as the jury deciding Fuller's fate, Gusoff reported.

All of the recordings are now in evidence in Fuller's trial, which paused Thursday for the defendant to receive kidney dialysis treatment.

Fuller faces life in prison if convicted.
