Police: Robbery Victim Wrestles BB Gun Away From Attacker

VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Here's one robber that picked the wrong target.

A Long Island teen managed to turn the tables on his attack after wrestling a BB gun away from him, police said.

The 15-year-old was walking home from Valley Stream North High School Thursday afternoon when he passed a man sitting on a bench near the creek bed on Park Drive, police said.

The man walked up behind the teen, demanded he hand over his cellphone and then hit the teen in the back on the head with a BB gun, police said.

The two got into a struggle after the suspect tried to steal items from the teen's pockets, police said.

At that point, police said the teen was able to get the BB gun away from the suspect who then ran off. Police said the man only managed to get away with a dollar.

The victim suffered abrasions on his face, neck and arm but refused medical attention, police said.

Police have released a sketch of the suspect. He is described by police as a young Hispanic man, 16 to 18 years old, 150 pounds with a thin build and short brown or black hair with a possible scar or shaven area on his right eye brow. He was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and tan shorts.

Detectives request anyone with information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.  All callers will remain anonymous.
