7 Injured When Fire Rips Through Upper West Side Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Six firefighters and one civilian were injured in an extra-alarm fire that broke out Friday evening in an Upper West Side building.

The fire broke out at 511 Amsterdam Ave. near 84th Street and was raised to four alarms, according to the FDNY.

The five-story building has apartments above and restaurants and shops below, CBS2's Brian Conybeare reported.

The building is next door to the popular spot Jacob's Pickles, but the business was not damaged.

"We are thinking of our friends next door and sending all our positive vibes their way. We apologize for how this has affected your evenings and hope we have your understanding," Jacob's Pickles said in a statement posted to Facebook

Video posted to Twitter showed flames and black smoke shooting from the roof of the building.

The FDNY said one civilian suffered non-life-threatening injuries, along with six firefighters.

Late Friday, the American Red Cross Greater New York was helping 19 families find a place to stay.
