U.N. Apologizes To Haiti For Deadly Cholera Outbreak
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- With one month left in his term, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon took the opportunity Thursday to apologize to Haiti for the cholera outbreak that affected over 800,000 people and took the lives of more than 9,300.
"The United Nations deeply regrets the loss of life and suffering caused by the cholera outbreak in Haiti," he said. "We are profoundly sorry for our role."
Ki-moon said the U.N. bears a moral responsibility to renew its efforts to address the epidemic, which was on the decline until Hurricane Matthew hit the island, 1010 WINS' Steve Kastenbaum reported.
The disease was brought to the island by U.N. peacekeepers from Nepal.
Ki-moon called on member nations to dedicate $400 million to the effort over the next two years.
