1 dead in single-engine plane crash in Ulster County, New York, officials say

Deadly plane crash under investigation at Kobelt/Wallkill Airport in Ulster County

One person died in a small plane crash in Ulster County on Saturday, New York State Police say.

It happened just before 2:30 p.m. at the Kobelt/Wallkill Airport in the town of Shawangunk.

A Glasair II – a single-engine airplane – crashed in a field while trying to take off from the airport, according to state police and the Federal Aviation Administration. The plane then caught fire, state police say.

State police say the pilot was found dead at the scene. The pilot's identity has not yet been released.

No one else was on board the plane.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
