Bystanders Jump To Action After Man Falls Onto Subway Tracks On UES

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Strangers jumped to the rescue Friday afternoon when a man fell onto the subway tracks on the Upper East Side.

As CBS2's Dave Carlin reported, the man fell onto the platform at the 77th Street No. 6 train station around 2:30 p.m.

It was not clear exactly what caused the man to fall, but video showed he uses a cane when walking.

While some bystanders immediately called for help, what is described as a small group of others wasted no time -- hopping down onto the tracks and risking their lives to rescue the man.

"You only got seconds before something, God forbid, happens," said Karina Rodriguez of the Upper East Side. "So in the end, we have to help each other."

"I would've found him help. I would've said, 'Look, a man fell -- please help him,' but I feel like I'm too small. If I would've jumped down there, I would hurt myself," said Sherrell St. Pierre of Canarsie, Brooklyn.

But of those who did go onto the tracks, she added: "That's amazing, that's amazing. New Yorkers are nice."

By the time responders got down to the platform, the man was up and out of immediate danger. But he is described is seriously injured.

He was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
