4 Hurt When School Bus Jumps Curb On Upper East Side

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Four people were hurt Monday morning when a mini school bus jumped a curb on the Upper East Side.

The bus slammed into a stone wall around 8:15 a.m. at 85th Street and Third Avenue.

No students were on the bus at the time, but the four people who were injured are trainees with the Doe Fund, a non-profit organization that employs former homeless and incarcerated men.

The men were standing on the street about to do their trash pickup, 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa reported. Darren Paterson, who was standing with the men, jumped out of the way, but said his friends could not react in time.

"He got knocked from right over there to here," Paterson told CBS2's Ali Bauman. "I spoke to the gentleman driving the bus. He was in shock because his brakes failed."

The four men were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and are expected to be OK.

"Any time you see a worker get hurt, it's horrible," Upper East Side resident Alex Seele said.

"You're walking on the sidewalk and next thing you know, a school bus comes and runs you over," said Upper East Side resident Aklime Ali.

Police say there is no criminality involved, but the driver was given a summons for failure to yield to pedestrians.
