Uber To Launch New Cab-Pooling Service In New York City

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- First came the car-hailing service, now Uber is launching a cab-pooling program in New York City.

UberPool is slated to begin on Thursday, and will enable riders on similar driving routes to share travel and split the fare with strangers.

Rachel Holt, Uber's East Coast general manager, said UberPool will offer riders "lots of cost savings," the New York Post reported.

So how does it work? The service matches two users per ride, but allows each user to have one additional person accompany them for a total of four passengers.

Uber said it could reduce rates for users by about 50 percent.

The service is already up and running in Paris and San Francisco.

Over the summer, the company agreed in a settlement with the state attorney general to stop surge pricing -- hiking fares during emergencies and natural disasters.
