U.S. Marshal's Office: Security Officer Dead In Apparent Suicide At NYC Courthouse

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - Authorities say a court security officer has died after apparently shooting himself at a federal courthouse in Manhattan.

It happened around 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

Authorities say he was found in a basement locker room of the Thurgood Marshall federal courthouse at 40 Centre Street in Lower Manhattan.

The courthouse remains open.

Police say the 50-year-old victim was found unconscious and unresponsive with a head wound. He was alone and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Marhsal officials say he also a retired member of the NYPD, 1010 WINS reported.

The U.S. marshals' office is investigating. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

The officer's name was withheld.
