1 Killed, 1 Injured In Small Plane Crash Near Tweed New Haven Airport

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) --  One person has died and another has been seriously injured following a small plane crash in East Haven, Connecticut near the Tweed New Haven Airport.

The Piper PA 38 aircraft carrying the two people crashed in a swampy area near the end of a runway Wednesday morning. First responders trudged through 2 feet of water and ice to reach the wreckage.

Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. says the plane reported an emergency, turned around and fell from the sky. He says the plane was from a local flight school.

Drivers were being urged to keep Silver Sands Road and Roses Farm Road clear for emergency personnel.

The Federal Aviation Administration says it will investigate.

The National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause of the accident.

The identities of the two male occupants of the plane haven't been released.
