Truck Slams Into Dry Cleaning Business In Roslyn Heights

ROSLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An out of control truck slammed into a roadside business on Long Island, injuring a worker inside and destroying the building.

Firefighters smashed out windows and tore down the crumbling facade of the dry cleaning business brick by brick on Tuesday.

"The Roslyn Highlands-Roslyn Rescue Fire Department received a call about 12 noon of an out of control truck that rolled down a hill," said Chief Michael Uttaro, with the Nassau County Fire Marshals Office.

Neighbors said no one was at the wheel of the truck when it came barreling through Harbor Hills Dry Cleaners on Lincoln Avenue, CBS2's Dave Carlin reported.

"There was no driver. He was coming down the street. He went to the deli to go pick up some food. He must have left his car in park without the e-brake," said witness Chris Cuartas.

Cuartas owns a cell phone repair shop right next door. He said the crash violently shook the building, causing damage to his store's outer facade as well.

Immediately after the crash, he ran next door to help an injured worker.

"I saw this woman on the ground. She was a little cut up, very in shock," he said.

The woman was treated for cuts and bruises, Carlin reported.

The owner of Harbor Hills Dry Cleaners was also inside, but far enough behind the counter not to be injured.

"I saw the truck coming through my store, think it was strange," owner John Chund said.

A neighboring restaurant owner said she saw the truck driver run down the hill with his lunch in hand.

"He was just standing outside in amazement, pretty much," said Kathy Lanza. "I think he was a little shocked at what happened."

Police are calling it an accident and said the driver will likely not face charges.
