Tropical Storm Isaias Brings Down Trees, Scaffolding & Transformers In Westchester County

YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Westchester County also saw its share of serious damage from Tropical Storm Isaias.

In Yonkers, scaffolding went down on Rumsey Road, collapsing into an adjoining parking lot. Three cars were crushed, but fortunately, nobody was hurt, CBS2's Dick Brennan reports.

Cindy Campos was watching from a nearby apartment.

"Honestly, everything was, like, in slow motion because you don't think something so big can fall," she said.

She caught the collapse on video.

"I see that the scaffolding is really shaking, and I grab my phone and as soon as I grab my phone, the scaffold falls down and on top of three cars, unfortunately. But there was no one there, so thankfully everyone is safe," Campos said. "You don't think something so big could fall and even yesterday, I saw the people working there and making sure that everything was secure."

In Mount Vernon, a transformer came down on Central Parkway and burst into flames. Wires were dangling and burning all over the street.

"There was a lot of sparks and it was a huge fire in the middle of the street here," one resident said.

No one was hurt there, either.

The storm seemed to cut a path through northern Mount Vernon. One tree slammed into a home on Central Parkway, hitting an upstairs bathroom.

Henry Anderson was in a nearby room.

"I was actually taking a nap at the time and I heard a crashing sound and I woke up and it kinda took my breath away," he said.

In Bronxville, residents gathered for a photo op they wished they didn't have to see.

A tree seemingly too massive to go down was crushed by the wind outside a church.

"They have the Christmas pageants on this hill," Bronxville resident Toni Alleva said. "To see anything in nature go like this is sad."

Its strong winds toppled the family's beloved oak tree, sending it crashing through the roof of the home. Its massive branches pierced the attic and Grayson's bedroom. Thankfully, he was not in the room.

"The tree crashed and then a gas leak happened and then we got out," Grayson said. "I got like kind of scared because there's not really anything that's like a big boom to scare me."

"We were luckily on the other side of the house, so everyone's safe and sound. It's a pretty impressive tree, so we got some good photos of it. In the scheme of things no one got hurt, so it can get fixed," mother Johanna Campbell added.

Con Edison went to the family's home to fix the gas leak and the power.

Westchester residents have quite the clean-up to do, but their first priority is getting the power back.

"Hopefully the power will be back tonight. I don't know. Hope springs eternal, right?" Mount Vernon resident Bob Uhrlass said.

Con Edison said more than 200,000 customers in Westchester County are without electrical service due to the storm.
