State Troopers Deliver Baby On Side Of Jersey Turnpike

NEWARK, N.J (CBSNewYork) -- It was not a typical Monday for four state troopers in New Jersey, who were called to action by a woman in labor on the side of the road near Newark on Nov. 23.

The woman was driving with her husband on the New Jersey Turnpike when her water suddenly broke, forcing the couple to pull over and call 911, officials said.

State Trooper Robert Ciecwicz, Det. Jason Kazan and Det. Robert Kilmurray arrived at the scene at around 2:43 p.m. to help deliver the baby, officials said. Trooper Robert Ravotto, an EMT, arrived shortly after to assist with first aid until the ambulance -- which was delayed in road traffic -- arrived.

The mother and newborn were taken to University Medical Center in Newark in good condition, officials said.

According to officials, the couple was on their way to a doctor's appointment when the woman's water broke unexpectedly -- prior to the baby's due date.

The newborn baby is a girl.
