Tri-State To Spring Forward For Daylight Saving Time

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Get ready to spring forward!

Daylight Saving Time officially starts Sunday at 2 a.m.

Remember to set your clocks forward one hour before getting to bed tonight. Most smartphones should update automatically.

The FDNY said it's also a good time to change batteries in smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and other alarms in your home.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is also using Daylight Saving Time as a way to remind residents of the need to stay awake and alert while behind the wheel.

Young male drivers have the highest risk of fatigue-related crashes, according to the governor's Traffic Safety Committee.

Cuomo said highway message boards throughout the state will bear the message "Stay Awake, Stay Alive'' to discourage drowsy driving.

The administration says tricks like turning on the radio or opening a car window don't work, and that the only way drivers can deal with fatigue is by finding a safe place to pull over and sleep.

In 2013, 3,244 crashes were reported involving a driver who fell asleep and another 1,228 in which drowsiness or fatigue was cited as a contributing factor.
