Tri-State Area Residents Hit Beaches, Boardwalks For Holiday Weekend Fun

BELMAR, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- It may have been a rough start, but Mother Nature has finally delivered.

Following a soggy Fourth of July, Tri-State area residents are finally getting the sun and warm temperatures they've been hoping for.

"Beautiful! Can't beat it. Ten!" said one beachgoer.

It was blue skies over head with sun worshipers taking in the rays in Belmar, N.J. Saturday afternoon, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported.

"The weather today is perfect. It's not hot and it has a nice breeze," said one man.

Elona from Bergen County said she was worried about a washout with Hurricane Arthur kicking off the holiday weekend with plenty of clouds and rain.

"I did. They weren't sure until like the very last minute if it was going to go out to sea or come inland," she said.

So many residents and vacationers were out and about making up for the lost day that the Parkway was stop and go all the way back to northern New Jersey, Smith reported.

Beaches and boardwalks in New York were also packed with people relishing in the beautiful weather, including in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

Kyle came down to Coney Island from Boston with friends to see what the iconic boardwalk and beach were all about.

"I heard it was a place to have a lot of fun and it's a beach and amusement park. It's pretty awesome," he told 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten.

Brooklyn born and raised Ileana told Baumgarten there's no reason for her to travel any distance this holiday weekend when she's got Coney Island in her backyard.

"There's the atmosphere, the rides, the sun, the people," she said.
