Tri-State Area Plumbers Flush With Work During Cold Snaps

RIDGEFIELD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- This month's extreme cold has been great for Graham Peters' paycheck, but it's bad news for his customers' pipes.

Peters, a technician at Roselle-based Absolute Plumbing, clocked a 100-hour work week earlier this month as temperatures dipped into the single digits.

This week, the Tri-State area finds itself in the midst of a similar deep freeze.

"Since the cold snap, we've been really busy," Peters told WCBS 880's Levon Putney. "Lots of frozen pipes, burst pipes."

Peters said it's hard to take preventative steps to protect pipes at this point "because places that aren't normally cold are getting cold that people haven't thought about for the past 20 years."

But he advised homeowners to leave hot and cold water lines dripping in bathrooms and kitchens, especially overnight in older homes. Insulation is the best bet if pipes are exposed, but that could require shelling out the money to hire a professional.
