Travel Site Names Freeport, LI, And Asbury Park, NJ, Among 20 Coolest Towns In US
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Freeport, Long Island, and Asbury Park, New Jersey, are among the top 20 coolest towns in America, according to the travel website Matador Network.
Freeport came in seventh place, and Mayor Robert Kennedy said he knows why.
"The Nautical Mile has dozens of restaurants, bars, stores, shops and fishing boats available to all of the visitors," Kennedy told 1010 WINS. "We have a hotel in town. It's the fishing capital of the Northeast of the United States."
Kennedy said the town has approximately $200 million of redevelopment scheduled for downtown Freeport.
"I'm proud to say that we're one of the coolest towns, and we're going to keep it that way," Kennedy said. "We're going to keep this town clean, neat and a great place for people to live."
Asbury Park was ranked 17th on the list.
Asheville, North Carolina, took the top spot, followed by Frisco, Colorado, and Laguna Beach, California.
Some of the things that make a town cool included walkable downtown areas, nearby outdoor recreation and cultural diversity, according to Matador Network.
