Nassau County Legislators Slash $105 Proposed Traffic Ticket Fee
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A new traffic ticket fee has been proposed in Nassau County.
After going back and forth with residents, the Nassau County Republican legislators have changed a proposed $105 fee to a $55 dollar fee added on for only traffic tickets, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.
If passed, the measure is expected to raise up to $30 million.
Democratic legislator Kevan Abrahams says that the new legislation would still impose large fines on Long Island drivers.
"Say for example, you go though a red light camera. You would pay a $50 ticket and $45 dollar administrative fee. With this additional $55 dollars it would be $150 dollars. So you are still talking about a very hefty, hefty fine," Abrahams said.
The presiding officer said in a statement that "despite the criticisms of the Democrat minority, who have offered no solutions whatsoever, cutting this fee is the right thing to do for Nassau County residents."
The public safety fee was introduced as part of Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano's 2017 budget proposal.
