"There's no question that it made me better," said Glavine, who was promoting his new book, "Inside Pitch: Playing and Broadcasting the Game I Love." "Being around those guys, it makes you a better pitcher."

Glavine said he, Maddux and Smoltz were very close and generally talked about baseball -- including how to pitch certain batters -- even while playing golf.

The former Met added that it's becoming impossible to keep such a talented trio of pitchers together.

"Economically, I can't imagine how a team would be able to keep three guys like that together for 10-plus years like we were able to do that during that point in time," he said. "We know that we were extremely fortunate."
