New York State Lawmaker Seeks To Do Away With Tax On Toilet Paper
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A New York state assemblyman would like to see a tax on toilet paper flushed away.
As WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, Assemblyman David Weprin (D-Queens) said a state tax that currently affects toilet paper "stinks."
"Everybody in our society uses toilet paper for an essential use," he said.
Weprin said the basics should not be taxed. He is also against taxes on women's hygiene products.
"You know, sales tax is generally not meant for items of necessity," Weprin said. "You know, we exempt food, we exempt other essential items – and there's no question that toilet paper and women's sanitary napkins, et cetera, certainly fall into that necessity category."
Weprin pointed out that seven states – including New Jersey and Pennsylvania already exempt toilet paper from sales tax.
