Ticket Prices Soar, But Rangers' Cup Appearance May Only Bring Small Economic Boost
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- If you were hoping to catch the Stanley Cup action live, you better be prepared to shell out the big bucks.
Getting into Madison Square Garden could cost as much as the Super Bowl, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported Saturday.
Analyst firm Tiq-IQ estimated that average ticket prices on the secondary market would come in at $2,200, and Crain's New York Business Contributor Greg David cautioned that those are just asking prices.
"Don't believe the numbers. Those are asking prices, not selling prices," he said.
David added that sellers are simply testing the market and that prices typically drop closer to game day.
Fans outside Madison Square Garden told 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgaten they were not happy about the cost.
"Outrageous for a working person," one man said.
"Hockey shouldn't be that much," another man added.
With the Rangers in the Stanley Cup final, the city will see a small boost to the economy compared to other major sporting events.
The Rangers' quest for the cup will generate about $10 million in economic activity for the city, but David added that the NHL final is a far cry from the Super Bowl.
"It's a fraction. When people say that hockey is the fourth or fifth ranker sport, that's actually just true," he said.
