NEW YORK -- There was a tragic discovery at a Bronx apartment building on Sunday.

Three people, including a 5-year-old boy, were found dead.

The police tape come down late Sunday afternoon, but Crime Scene Unit investigators were still out actively investigating what exactly led up to a gruesome discovery earlier in the morning.

It was a busy scene outside the apartment building on 136th Street at Cypress Avenue in Mott Haven, where just before 7 a.m. officers responded to calls about a 38-year-old man found dead with a stab wound to the torso in the first-floor hallway. Officials later found the bodies of a 33-year-old woman and a 5-year-old boy in an apartment in the same building.

"I used to see her taking the son (in the) morning to the school, like 7, 7:30. Very nice people," said Dehan Ali, owner of the nearby 674 Neighborhood Grocery.

That store was the usual stop for the 33-year-old woman, according to Ali. He said he would often see her and the 5-year-old boy come to the store a few steps away from the apartment building.

"I see them, very quiet people. I'm surprised this happened to them. Very nice people," Ali said.

Police stood outside the apartment building's entrance on Sunday afternoon as the investigation continued into how the three victims died. Investigators did not immediately identify them.

Ali said he is shocked the woman and child are gone.

"I feel bad about them, especially the son. He was a lovely boy. Very cute boy, very quiet, you know?" Ali said.

Police have not confirmed whether the woman is the mother of the 5-year-old boy, and what relation, if any, the male victim has to them.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
