Thousands Run For A Cause In Annual Garden City Turkey Trot
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Thanksgiving is a holiday of traditions, and on Thanksgiving morning, thousands joined one Long Island community in a holiday tradition of their own.
Around six thousand people participated in Garden City's annual 'Turkey Trot' race this year, with many clad in colorful and creative holiday-inspired costumes, WLNY TV 10/55's Jennifer McLogan reported.
"We almost get every state because people come home for Thanksgiving and they visit their relatives on Long Island, Ken Aneser, director of the race, said. "But first, they run the turkey trot."
Some runners participated in a shorter 1.5 mile route, while others opted for the more challenging five-mile course.
Proceeds from the race benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Food collected at the event was also donated to the Interfaith Nutrition Network, a soup kitchen in Hempstead.
"It's a great cause," runner Courtney Priziosi said. "And it is great to see the community out here running together for leukemia."
