Tesla Opens Car 'Gallery,' Charging Station In Paramus

PARAMUS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- High-end electric car maker Tesla opened a new showroom in Paramus on Thursday.

But as WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported, you can look, but you can't buy.

State law prevents car manufacturers from selling directly to customers. Tesla spokesman Will Nicholas said the company is lobbying to change the law.

But for now, the company is hoping the new "gallery" off Route 17 will serve as a sort of billboard until it can sell in stores.

Interested buyers can complete their purchases online.

"We're trying to penetrate any market that has an appetite for driving electric, Nicholas said.

The facility also serves as a charging station and service center for customers.

"It's the best car I have ever had," said William Weiss, of Saddle River, who stopped Thursday by to charge his car.
