14-Year-Old Boy Killed Attempting Subway Stunt In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police say a teenage boy died after trying to perform a dangerous subway stunt Wednesday night in Brooklyn.
It happened around 10:30 p.m. at the New Lots Avenue station.
Police said the 14-year-old boy was riding between two cars of a southbound L train when he attempted to jump off the moving train and onto the platform, but he slipped and fell, CBS2's Magdalena Doris reported.
The boy was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The teen was with a friend at the time. That friend is now talking with police and helping them with the investigation.
Police Commissioner James O'Neill called the incident "a terrible tragedy."
"I feel for him and his family," O'Neill said. "Subways are a dangerous place. I was a transit cop for a long time. I understand the dangers of the subway and it's not a place to be engaging in behavior where you might possibly put yourself in jeopardy."
A similar incident happened Saturday in the West Village where a person was killed while standing on a step outside of a train. Police say when that train entered through a tunnel, he was knocked off by a beam, fell onto the tracks and was killed instantly.
