Teen Killed After Crashing Into Mahopac High School

MAHOPAC, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police say a teenager has died after crashing a car into a suburban New York high school.

According to police, the accident happened around 11:30 p.m. Friday at Mahopac High School in Putnam County.

The school's superintendent Thomas Manko told 1010 WINS the 19-year-old male was a former student at the school.

Manko said the teen was driving on Baldwin Place Road at a high rate of speed when the car went airborne and broke through an outside wall and into the inside wall.

"Our heart goes out to the family in this time of need and loss... The district is ready to help parents, students and employees in need," Manko said in a statement.

Friends identified the victim as David Diachenko, CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez reported.

Emergency responders told Sanchez they tried to revive the Mahopac High School graduate, but he died at a nearby hospital.

The principal of Mahopac High School spoke out on Twitter saying, "Another sad day for Mahopac. I'm sorry I'm so quiet - Just don't know what to say other than you're all in my prayers. #StayStrongPAC."

Three classrooms were damaged in the crash, however, the superintendent said school will be open on Monday, 1010 WINS reported.

Beginning Sunday the school said it will make counselors and school clinicians available between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. for students and parents as long as the service is needed.

Police said they are still investigating the cause of the crash.
