One Swimmer Rescued, One Found Submerged In Ocean At Long Beach

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- One swimmer was rescued and another was later found submerged in the water after the two were caught in a rip tide Saturday evening at Long Beach in Nassau County.

Long Beach Police responded to the beach area off National Boulevard around 6:30 p.m. where a male swimmer had just been rescued by an off-duty lifeguard. The swimmer informed officials his friend was still in the water.

An extensive search was conducted by Long Beach police, Long Beach lifeguards, United States Coast Guard, Nassau County Aviation and the Nassau County Marine Bureau.

The second swimmer was found after being submerged in the ocean for about an hour and transported to South Nassau Community Hospital. The swimmer is a 23-year-old man from Brooklyn, but his identity is being withheld until notification of the next of kin. His condition was not immediately available.

Swimmers were ordered out of the water at 6 p.m. when lifeguards went off duty. Officials say subsequently, the man reportedly chose to go back in the water and was caught in a rip tide.
