Yankees Acquire Didi Gregorius, Trade Shane Greene In 3-Team Deal

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Yankees have acquired shortstop Didi Gregorius from the Diamondbacks.

WFAN's Sweeny Murti first reported that the deal was close.

It's a three-team deal with the Tigers and D-backs. Detroit is getting starting pitcher Shane Greene from the Yankees and Arizona is getting starting pitcher Robbie Ray and infield prospect Domingo Leyba from Detroit.

According to Murti, general manager Brian Cashman tried to acquire Gregorius at last year's Winter Meetings but was unsuccessful.

The Yankees had a glaring hole at shortstop following Derek Jeter's retirement after the season.

Gregorius, 24, is an excellent defender but he hasn't hit much in the majors. In his second big-league season in 2014, he hit .226 with six homers and 27 RBIs in 270 at-bats. He stole just three bases and posted a .290 on-base percentage.

Murti reports that other clubs were interested in Gregorius as well, and the Mets -- who are looking for an upgrade at shortstop -- had been linked to him for some time.

Greene did an excellent job for New York last season in its depleted rotation. In 14 starts, the 26-year-old rookie went 5-4 with a 3.78 ERA. He struck out 81 and walked 29 in 78 2/3 innings.
